Correspondence, drafts of writings, research files, patient files, reports, conference material, oral history interview, and printed material documenting Lewis's contributions to the development of psychoanalysis in the United States. Includes material pertaining to his work as professor and director of clinical psychiatry at a number of universities and institutions including Saint Elizabeths Hospital, Washington, D.C. (1923-1933); as cofounder of the Washington-Baltimore Psychoanalytic Society (1930); as coordinator of the Committee for Research in Dementia Praecox (1935-1950); and as psychiatric consultant during the Nuremberg War Crime Trials (1945-1946). Includes drafts of Lewis's Research in Dementia Precox: Past Attainments, Present Trends and Future Possibilities (1936) and other writings on schizophrenia and a file containing medical and psychiatric reports for Nazi leader Rudolf Hess. Correspondents include A. A. Brill, Karl A. Menninger, Adolf Meyer, Clarence P. Oberndorf, and Sandor Rado.
